When Iam Dead My Dearest by Christina Rossetti

SHORT SUMMARY

When Iam Dead My Dearest by Christina Rossetti

This short lyrical poem, 'When I am Dead, My Dearest,' has been written by Christina Rossetti. The poetess has expressed her various desires in this poem. She has instructed her lover on various things to do and not do after her death. The poetess has presented a contrast between the living world and the world of death, stanza-wise.

The very first stanza deals with the world of the living. In this stanza, the poetess asks her lover not to sing a sad song after her death and not to plant the rose and cypress trees near her grave because they are useless.

The second stanza deals with the world of the grave. Here in this stanza, the poetess says that she won't be able to see the shadow of cypress trees and feel the rain. She will neither hear the song of the nightingale nor the sad song. The poetess tells her lover to let the green be above her with showers and dewdrops. This stanza shows no sign of living, where nobody will be able to raise the poetess from her external sleep. Finally, she says that she may remember or forget her lover by chance.

SHORT SUMMARY

Musee Des Beaux-Arts by W. H. Auden

This poem, 'Musee des Beaux Arts', has been composed by W. H. Auden. The poet has presented the reality of the world through the beautiful art of Pieter Breughel. The poet has presented the concept of humans' sufferings and their indifference towards each other's tragedies. The beautiful painting of the suffering of Icarus shows the tragedy of Icarus and others' indifference towards his tragedy. The poet says that the old and ancient painters understood the nature of human suffering. The poet uses Breughel's painting to show how life goes on, indifferent to crisis or tragedy. With the help of this painting, the poet wants to show the indifference nature of the people and humans of the modern world.

The painting shows a boy named Icarus. Despite his father's warning, Icarus moved closer to the sun. He forgot his father's warning in joy. Due to the extreme heat of the sun, the wax that held Icarus's feathers softened. Slowly, the feathers fell apart. Finally, Icarus fell. He cried a lot while falling. He plunged into the deep blue sea and disappeared. Other people are showing indifference towards Icarus's tragedy. Everyone turns away from the suffering of Icarus.

The ploughman in the painting has seen this tragedy of Icarus but doesn't show his interest in Icarus's suffering. He becomes indifferent towards him. The sun remains as usual as before. The ploughman gets busy with his fieldwork and shows his indifference to the tragedy of Icarus. The passengers of the ship may have seen the fall of Icarus, but they are also busy and indifferent to that tragic event. Their journey is much more important for them than that of Icarus's tragedy.

In this way, the poet has presented the indifferent nature of humans to others' tragedies. The main theme of this poem is that people in the modern world are quite busy and do not care about the sufferings of other people.
