Lewis Carroll published "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" in the year 1865. The story begins with Alice, sitting alongside a riverbank with her sister. Alice’s sister is reading a picture-less book, which bores Alice. A bit later, she sees a White Rabbit running right past her. The rabbit takes his watch out of his waistcoat and exclaims that he’ll soon be late. After that, he jumps down into a rabbit hole. This mysterious event in front of her eyes intrigues her and she starts running after him. She jumps down the rabbit hole herself and is falling for quite a while.
When she lands, she finds herself in a mysterious hall. She chases after the White Rabbit but she loses sight of him.
A bit later, she finds a tiny golden key on a table. At first, she thinks it might go to the door, but the particular key is way too small to fit the doors' locks.
When she looks through the keyhole, she sees a magnificent garden. Then, she finds a little bottle that has “Drink me” written on its label. When she does so according to the instruction of the bottle, she shrinks to only 10 inches tall. Alice wants to get into the magnificent garden but realizes that she forgot the key on the table.
Next, Alice finds a small cake with the words “Eat me” written on it. After a while, she starts growing until her head smacks the roof.
This incident causes her to start crying gallons of tears, given her size. The White Rabbit appears again with a pair of white gloves and a large fan.
To Alice's surprise, she has started shrinking again and is now 2 feet tall. She shrinks much and slips into a saltwater sea of her tears. Alice finds a mouse in the salty sea of her tears but offends it after she talks about how her cat could eat him.
Even many animals fall into the sea. Yet, they all try to dry the ground. All of them want to get dry, so the animals suggest starting a caucus race. The rules for the race are that they all run in a circle and everyone is a winner.
The Dodo bird wants to give out prizes. So they ask Alice what she has in her pocket. All Alice has are little pieces of candy and a thimble. The animals select and take the candy and Alice gets her thimble back as a prize. Later, everyone goes their separate ways after Alice mentions her cat.
In chapter four, the White Rabbit searches for the white gloves and the fan that he lost. When he sees Alice, he mistakenly thinks of her as his maid. He orders her to run back to his house and fetch him a new set of gloves and a fan for the Duchess.
Alice runs to his house and gets the items for him. But then, she gets distracted by a vial with no label. She drinks it and starts to grow which makes it impossible to escape the house. The rabbit comes to his house and tries his best to get Alice out. A crowd has grown and all of them throw pebbles at the window and some hit her.
All the pebbles turn into little cakes which Alice eats and finally shrinks. She begins running into the woods to figure out her next moves. Unfortunately, she runs into a puppy that is much huge than she is. She runs away from there and finds a caterpillar sitting atop a mushroom smoking a hookah. She tells the caterpillar about how she wishes she was her normal size.
Next, the caterpillar packs up and goes to leave. On his way out, he tells Alice options that one side of the mushroom will make her taller and the other side will make her smaller.
A pigeon flies just over and accuses her of being a serpent, which she denies. Eventually, Alice regains her normal size. Next, she sees a Fish-Footman run out of the woods. He has brought her an invitation for her to play Croquet with the Queen. Alice goes to the Queen’s house and moves in.
There in the house, everyone is sneezing from all the pepper in the soup, which Alice notices. Then, Alice spots the Cheshire cat with his constant grin.
The Duchess hands her baby to Alice. She leaves to go get ready to play croquet with the Queen. Then, the baby transforms into a pig. She asks the Cheshire cat for directions. He replies to her about where the Mad Hatter and the March Hare live. Later, he vanishes. The grin of the cat remains behind even after his body has left. Alice moves to the March Hare’s house and joins their tea party where it is always six pm.
It has been this way since the Mad Hatter sang at Queen of Heart’s concert. She became angry and yelled, “he’s murdering the time! Off with his head!”.
This is one of the Queen's most famous lines and is never actually done. Later, Alice leaves the tea party angry at Mad Hatter’s rudeness.
Later, Alice comes to the Queen’s garden. She sees the Queen’s gardeners painting all the white roses with red paint. She heads in to play croquet and finds quite a strange scene. All the players use flamingos for mallets, hedgehogs for balls, and soldiers stacked up for the goals.
The Queen gets crazy at the Cheshire cat and orders his head cut off. But, since the cat's smile is so big it makes it impossible. Then, the Queen invites Alice to watch the Mock Turtle. To reach there, Alice rides a Gryphon. The Mock Turtle tells her about how he used to be a real turtle. Next, Alice is shown the Lobster Quadrille which is a bizarre dance where they throw
a lobster into the sea. In chapter eleven, Alice arrives at a courthouse where the Knave of Hearts is being tried.
His main crime is stealing the Queen's tarts. Alice tips over the jury box. The king declares the trial can’t continue until all jurors are returned. The Queen demands a verdict from Alice's side. When she refuses, all the playing cards rush at her. Then, Alice hears her sister's words “Wake up, Alice dear! Why what a long sleep you’ve had!”.
