FULL PLOT SUMMARY

Eleven by Sandra Cisneros

The main protagonist Rachel, who has just turned 11 years old, is celebrating her birthday today. She talks about how birthdays can be complicated. According to her, your new age includes all the ages you've been before. Even though you turn eleven, it doesn't instantly feel like you're eleven; it takes time. You still carry all the ages you've been, and they come out when you make a mistake, feel scared, or want to cry.

When her teacher, Mrs. Price, asks about a red sweater left in the coat closet for several weeks, Rachel wishes she was 102 to avoid claiming it. Mrs. Price puts the sweater on Rachel's desk, and everyone denies it's theirs. Rachel doesn't admit it's hers, quietly observing the details and deciding she wouldn't claim it even if it was hers.

Another student suggests the red sweater belongs to Rachel's, and Mrs. Price agrees, even though Rachel disagrees. Despite Rachel's knowing it's not hers, her protests are ignored because the teacher is older and an authority figure. Rachel moves the sweater to the edge of her desk and tries to focus on positive thoughts about the family party waiting for her at home this evening.

When Rachel opens her eyes, she finds the sweater on her desk, and any happy thoughts disappear. She imagines ways to get rid of it during recess, like throwing it over a fence or leaving it somewhere. But her teacher notices the sweater and tells Rachel to put it on. Rachel tries to protest again, but it doesn't work. Reluctantly, she wears the sweater, feeling upset about its smell and texture and worrying about possible germs.

Rachel starts crying and shaking at her desk. Right before lunch, another girl remembers that the sweater is hers. Rachel takes it off and handles it for her. Mrs. Price doesn't acknowledge the unpleasant situation.

Next, Rachel tries to tell herself that there will be cake and presents at the party at home in the evening. But it's too late. Her bad experiences at school have ruined any excitement she had. Now, she just wishes to be somewhere else, away from the embarrassment she went through.
